Add extra RAK2247 module to RAK7249 gateway?

I bought a RAK7249 with only one 2247 (8 channel option). Can I buy another 2247 and install it myself along with a dedicated antenna? I see there is an empty slot for it.

Hello @MattiasF,

This is possible, just make sure to get the USB option.

Thanks for the superfast reply Vladislav!

Does the firmware automatically recognize the extra 2247 or do I need to reconfigure it?

Hei @MattiasF,

IT is recognized, so you do not have to tell the gateway it is there, however you should still go in and configure the frequency plan for the second concentrator in the packet forwarder section.

That is super interesting. Does that mean one of the 2247’s could be 915MHz and the other 433MHz? With the right module and antennas, is it possible to support two bands with one gateway?

Not at this point. This would require a polypacket forwarder, which is not supported at this point. You can only use a single band for now, however with twice the number of channels if the specific band permits it.

Understood. Thanks again for taking the time to explain and holding the fort during the Chinese New Year.

@MattiasF No worries, plus I am part of the EU team, New Year is long past here
You need more help we will be here.

Hi,
I have a RAK7249 gateway and I’ve installed a second RAK2247(USB) concentrator in the spare mPCIe slot, but it doesn’t appear to be working correctly.

Under the channel plan I have selected the “Add LorRa Concentrator” button and can configure the frequency band. However, when I check the system log I can see the following error implying that there was and issue starting the concentrator(s),

Error Message:
user.crit lora_pkt_fwd[11127]: ERROR: [main] failed to start the SX1301/SX1302 concentrator

Can you please confirm whether the second USB concentrator in slot 1 has to be configured?

Note:
The original RAK2247(SPI) in slot 0 works fine if the RAK2247(USB) is disabled.

See below for some screenshots.

Kind Regards
Greg

Note:
I installed the RAK2247(USB) into a spare mPCIe slot in my RAK7391 WisGate Connect gateway running RAKpiOS and it looks like it detects the RAK2247 module.

Not sure why my RAK7249 has issues with the RAK2247(USB) module as I’m pretty sure that the module is ok.

Also, when I ssh to my RAK7249 and run the lsusb command, I believe that the RAK2247 has been detected i.e. device ID 0403:6010 is the same as that detected by my RAK7391 WisGate Connect.

This, my thoughts at this stage is that it’s a it’s either compatibility issue with WisGate OS or a configuration issue.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

To anyone concerned with similar issues, I’ve just received a response from RAK Wireless support stating the following regarding the addition of a second concentrator in the RAK7249.

Response:
It is not possible to add a second concentrator to the Edge gateway after the purchase. The configuration is done in the production phase and can not be changed later.
