Meshtastic Kit with WiFi Functionality

Gents I need some piece of advice. I just got myself a RAK4631 with RAK19007 Base Board and it works like a charm. Now I am looking for a similar setup from RAK but with WiFi functionality. It seems that a set of RAK19007 Base Board + RAK13300 for Lora + RAK11200 Module for WiFi will suit my needs, however my concern is that RAK11200 is fitted with an internal WiFi antenna only, which in my case may not be enough. I wish to use it as a meshtastic gateway for ATAK server, it will be mounted on the roof so I would like to avoid connecting it with ethernet cable.

Is there any way to add WiFi to a setup based on RAK4631 Lora module?

Welcome to the forum @Shinobi
Only WiFi options we have with WisBlock is the RAK11200 (needs RAK13300 for LoRa) or the RAK2305 (WiFi modem based on ESP32 with AT commands over Serial). Both have the same antenna (same ESP32)

For the first one, I have a setup working with Meshtastic and connecting over WiFi to MQTT broker. But I didn’t do any range tests for WiFi.
The second one (RAK2305) is not supported by Meshtastic (afaik)

Thanks for a quick reply! That’s very unfortunate though, external antenna connector is very useful in many applications. I was told that there is a way to solder an IPEX connector directly to the PCB of RAK11200, can anyone confirm it’s actually doable?

If you are good in soldering small parts, you can cut off the PCB antenna (move a 0Ohm resistor to a different position) and solder an IPEX connector:

That would be great, soldering an IPEX connector should not be a problem, I have the skills and equipment to do it. Just to make sure - I need to cut those two traces and solder the connector to those two pads?

RAK11200

No need to cut anything

(1) rotate the resistor from its original position for 90 degrees:

(2) solder the IPEX connector on the pads

Not sure (never did it), it might be easier to do (2) first and then just remove the resistor and place a solder bridge

Now I get it, thanks for the explanation! Just ordered some IPEX connectors, in the meantime I will order the devices from RAK and will try it, hopefully it will work.
