A RAK2287 Gateway module arrived today. Based on the new SX1302 chip the testing can commence.
I will post finding as the tests are undertaken.

Not the OP but mine seems to work fine using a locally modified version of the upstream Semtech repos.
For me the reduced power consumption over the first generation sx1301 is the primary draw - or we might say, reduced draw (of current, and thus production of heat).
I don’t really depend on the GPS but hand wired the UART signals on the hosting socket connector and it seems to work, I did a one time test transmitting based on GPS timing, which was successful.
