RAK1921 mounting

Hi everyone, I have the RAK1921 OLED display, which comes with the mounting screws and standoffs. Quick question, is it designed to mount directly onto the base (doesn’t seem to be the case, as nothing seems to line up), or will I simply have to design my own mounting nearby and use dupont wires to connect?
I was hoping to solder the display directly through to the base.
This comment had me wondering if it is designed to be in a certain position…

Hi Andy,
I did not solder it, but I use the OLED display directly on the RAK5005-O Base board:

Yep, that’s how I was going to do it also, so the standoffs are if I need to move to a different position. Thanks for the prompt reply!

The stand-offs are needed if you want to use the display with the RAKBox-B1

Like Andy, I have a base to which I am trying to connect a RAK1921. My base is RAK19001. The figure in his original question helps but the nomenclature on the RAK19001 is somewhat different. I do not mean to quibble but are these the same:
Vcc ==> Vdd
SCL ==> IC1_SCL
SDA ==> IC1_SDA

Trying to make sure i do not do a smoke job. :slight_smile:

Correct.
If you plug-in the OLED as shown in the pictures, the pin assignment will be correct.

The pictures and nomenclature shown in the thread and the documentation for the OLED do not correspond exactly to the RAK19001. But, your YES to my question does help. I can proceed from there, although it does not appear to plug-in but requires soldering eight very small PCB connections. Since I am not overly keen on the electronics side, things were a bit confusing. Thank you for helping to clarify things for me. (The discussion on stand-offs was also helpful.)

Managed to get the RAK1921 wired into the RAK19001. It works fine but I would not want to use this particular result in production, just within proofs-of-concept. Let me offer some comments in the hope the community will offer their input as needed.

This thread got me to thinking: Physical placement of oled screen on Wisblock 19007.

Connected the OLED to the baseboard by soldering the OLED mounting kit’s four-point male-to-female plug to the associated solder points, as shown in this figure:

I did not use the female-to-female plug because the physical rotation required of the RAK1921 relative to the RAK19001 was unworkable. Instead, I soldered four jumper wires to the RAK1921 and plugged the other ends into the associated points on the male points on the female-male plug.

Followed the guidance in the sample program to test the result with a simple program. There was no smoke. Nothing burned out. So I guess everything is electrically correct. Here is the test program:
RAK1921_Testing.ino (773 Bytes)

If there is another need to add an OLED, i am thinking of trying this product: Solderless OLED Kit for RAKwireless WisBlock Boards & Starter Kit – Rokland.

Sure do appreciate all the advice and conversation on this topic.
